In post-apocalyptic Maine, safety is the highest priority. Every citizen is Netted, their thoughts monitored for homicidal, lawless impulses. But being Netted can cause as many problems as it solves.

Years after everyone thought they'd died, a young family are discovered, safe and sound, living in the wilderness. As their delighted relations race to pick them up, Boyce is overwhelmed with relief that the daily battle to keep their small son, Hardy, safe has been lifted from his shoulders.

His wife, Kris, dreads returning to the settlement where she was born and raised. Her mental powers make living among others difficult, even dangerous, but even she is unprepared for the catastrophic events that follows.

It’s been a truly horrendous week on almost every level. Except for the books I’ve read and the fact that the writing seems to be going well. Thank goodness for those moments of escape. Enough said. As for the weather, it continues to be cold – the daytime temperatures today are forecast to be in the low fifties, with rain. And the coming week is due to continue wet, chilly and windy. Oh joy.

Review of AUDIOBOOK Tombland – Book 7 of the Matthew Shardlake series by C.J. Sansom

This is another review I wrote in early 2021, before I went down with Covid-19 and became ill with Long Covid.

I have loved this historical series – see my reviews of Revelation and Lamentation, charting the adventures of hunchback lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, since he found himself caught up in a murder during the dissolution of the monasteries. I’m aware that this series is my ultimate benchmark when reading any historical murder mystery and was a bit shocked last year when I’d realised that I had let my reading of this series slip. So I have been catching up. I’m so very glad I did – for it would have been a crime to miss out on listening to this offering, which is the final book in the series.
